To follow up that somewhat negative post, I wanted to share something positive and optimistic. Nobody likes a Negative Nancy! (Side note: I apologize if your name is Nancy, but I do love that saying).
I am blessed to work for the most amazing company ever. My company is small, but growing! In the last two months, we've hired four more people! We specialize in Enterprise Information Management (EIM) strategy and execution. I have a very small grasp of this field. Explaining it would take about four more blog posts. At a conference last month, I made the mistake of saying I was "Just an administrative coordinator" after someone asked me what I do.
What is wrong with this woman? She's asking about stuff that's nobody's business. "What do I do?"... Really, what do I do here? I should've written it down. "Qua" something, uh... qua... quar... quibo, qual...quir-quabity. Quabity assuance! No. No, no, no, no, but I'm getting close.

Apparently, even though I have nothing to do with the consulting aspect, I "take care of absolutely everything." This includes, but is not limited to:
- Billing/invoicing/expense reimbursement
- Filing
- Coordinating logistics for tradeshows, board meetings, and team working sessions
- New employee on-boarding
- New customer on-boarding
- Write press releases
- Sending annoying emails under the guise of a "gentle reminder"
- and miscellaneous personal assistant tasks for the partner of my company
I really love my job. Aside from the amazing list of endless benefits (I think I listed them before, but Free Lunch Fridays takes the cake), I truly love the people I work with. I look at them as coworkers, friends, and mentors, and I am so thankful to have such wonderful people to associate with.
- These people are experts in their field, but they never make me feel stupid. They are always there to explain things when I have questions.
- They are respectful, professional, kind, caring, funny, and make me feel welcome. I go to them for anything/everything, from advice and guidance to talking trash about sports.
- They genuinely care about my best interests. When I was on the fence about law school, they made pro/con lists and risk vs. reward. All of the senior management called me to discuss my options.
- They're normal. Okay, they are professional sailors and really good golfers, but they have normal lives too. They might drive Audis and BMWs, but they forward me Group-Ons and coupon codes (for Sperry's and Uggs!)
- They're my friends. I can tell you each employee's spouse's name, kids' names, kids' sports, favorite sports teams, etc. They always ask me about my weekend/holiday/vacation plans. I even email some of the wives about The Bachelorette.
- They're funny. They can quote Super Troopers and Friends episodes like its their job.
And I am VERY proud to say -- They asked me to keep working part-time while in law school. They aren't replacing me!!
What do you love about your job? Now's your chance to brag!
Or you can complain about how crappy your job is - we've all been there before too!
I love that I get to work when I want to work and set my own pay. I like the freedom to be able to spend time with my kids when I want to. I feel like I've missed out on my family for too long.
ReplyDeleteOh, what do you do?! You are so lucky to be able to put your family first. I bet your children really appreciate it. Even if they do not say it, they know. I loved it when I was younger and my dad switched jobs and I could see him everyday instead of every four days.
DeleteLove the office! I'm a full time student/SAHM right now. I love that I get to spend time with the little one and learn, learn, learn!
ReplyDeleteThat's incredible! What are you studying? :)
DeleteThat's cool that they aren't replacing you at your job. Now hopefully you can fit in those hours while going to law school.
ReplyDeleteWith my job, I'm like Whitney but without the kids. I like the flexibility to do things on my own hours. Ok I don't get to set my own pay either, but my pay generally reflects what kind of effort I put in.
Jeremy, you underestimate my capabilities. I was a slacker in high school and maintained 4.3 GPA. In college, I took a full course load (18+ credits), graduated a semester early, and maintained a 3.5 GPA. It would've been higher, but my first semester, I slacked off (silly field hockey) and had a 3.2 GPA. :(
DeleteYay!
ReplyDeleteIt always helps to find the positives in any situation, doesn't it? Sometimes I find myself hating my job but when I stop to think about it- I really have a good situation here.
Glad to hear you are doing well~!
Aw, thanks Holly! I appreciate the kind thoughts.
Deleteok i totally want to be you one day where i love my job and can't wait to go every day. sadly this is not the case for me right now but good for you for loving your job! im happy for you
ReplyDeleteAw thank you. What do you do? I feel so gratefuly for having this job (especially at such a young age - all my friends HATE their jobs).
DeleteCan I have your job? haha, no no, I like doing blue collar stuff, but man, I wish I loved my coworkers and boss and work as much as you! Sounds great! Congrats on not only finding a great job, but getting to keep it as you get more edumacated. :-)
ReplyDeleteI do love my job. Its great. However, I do miss the blue collar work. Sometimes office days pass soooo slow.
DeleteI'm a consultant so I love helping the client solve their problems. It's a very rewarding feeling to be the expert in a field and have people come to you to solve their "big" problems. I also enjoy reading and participating in conferences to keep that expert status. haha! Overall definitely blessed!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with law school!
John, what kind of consulting work do you do? My company does consulting!! We deal with BIG DATA problems. Gosh I sound like a nerd. I enjoy the conferences because of all the free swag and yummy food. :)
DeleteThanks for the well wishes.
Woohooooo! I love my job too =) I don't have as amazing coworkers as you, but there are a few that I just absolutely love. They are so incredibly nice too, I would love to come back and work here after graduating. I think you know everything about why I love my job, but I also love the fact that we are nationwide and the opportunity to relocate almost anywhere is okay. Promotion and moving up seems easy as long as you are here for a few years and work hard!
ReplyDeleteI love that your job allows you the opportunity to return once you have a law degree. :) And you could always follow me to the east coast if I come back here after graduation!!
DeleteOh friend... careful while working during your first year of law school. The state bar might prohibit it. Don't get overwhelmed!
ReplyDeleteAs for my job... I love that I am trusted to manage my own time and my own cases. I am not made to deal with fake deadlines and layers and layers of office politics. Just one of the benefits of a small law firm!
